Although Kushtia was declared a full district in 1948, Meharpur was subdivided into a subdivision and it was included as a Sadar Police Station and was included in Chuadanga. Gangni is included with Kushtia Sadar subdivision. After some time Gangni was again included with Chuadanga. After the extinction of Meherpur subdivision, Meherpuris have to be victims of suffering. In 1952, during the reign of Governor Zakir Hossain, Meherpur again got the status of the sub-division.
The partition of 1947 divided the Mehrpur subdivision. Among the 05 mentioned earlier, Meherpur subdivision with the Sadar and Gangni were included in Kushtia district, on the other hand, 03 other thanas became part of West Bengal.
During the war of liberation, the then sub-divisional administrator Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury played a glorious role in the war of liberation. At the beginning of the War of Liberation, the need for formation of a formal government for the legalization of the independent Bangladesh government arises. Meherpur has been a witness to the glorious history of the formation of the first government of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The first capital of the independent Bangladesh and the formal oath of first government was held in the historic Amarkanas of Baidyanathtala of Meherpur Sadar upazila (now Mujibnagar upazila). The official administration of virtually independent Bangladesh starts from here. At the time of Bangladesh's independence, Meherpur has become a subdivision of the country.
After independence, on 24 February 1984, Meharpur was upgraded to the subdivision of the district. The Meherpur subdivision includes the Meherpur Sadar and Gangni thanas. Later Sadar and Mujibnagar upazilas were formed in 2000 in Sadar upazila. At present, Meherpur district consists of three upazilas of Meherpur Sadar, Gangni and Mujibnagar.
